There are many great places to canoe in the Great North Woods. East Inlet is alway a favorite paddling destination. Owned by the Nature Conservancy, East Inlet features a virgin stand of forest. Moose frequent the woodland pond and feed on the aquatic grasses. Dawn is the best time to canoe East Inlet with hopes of seeing moose. From Lopstick, take Rte 3 north to East Inlet Road. Go over the bridge (the bridge crosses the tiny Connecticut River) and take a right at the T. Follow the road to East Inlet. Turn into the boat launch and park.
After canoeing East Inlet, try Scott’s Bog. Just off from East Inlet Road, this 100 acre pond can be found by taking a left at the T after the bridge on East Inlet Road.
Round Pond is an easy pond to canoe. The 50 acre pond is home to brook trout. From Lopstick, head north on Rte 3 about a mile and take a left onto Round Pond Road. Follow the road and bear right when the road splits. Go a short distance to the boat launch on the left.
The Connecticut Lakes are fun to canoe. Caution is advised as storms can come up quickly and wind causes white caps and dangerous conditions. There are boat launches on Back Lake, Lake Francis, First Connecticut Lake, Second Connecticut Lake and Third Connecticut Lake. Stay close to the shore line and keep an eye on the sky for changing conditions. Have fun and stay safe!
